December 2024 Newsletter: Upcoming AGM, board positions, #StopExploitingLoyalty campaign, 2025 Trust events and more

Get involved – join the Board/Come to the AGM

The Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust Annual General Meeting will be taking place at CMS Cannon Place at 7pm on Monday 3 February 2025. We encourage all members to take part.

The formal Convening Notice was sent via email to all Full and Life Members on 6 December 2024. Full details can be found on our AGM web page which will be continually updated. Ahead of each AGM, one third of the Trust Board resign with those Board members permitted to seek re-election by the membership, if desired. This year Martin Buhagiar, Anthony Morkos and Rob White have resigned their posts.  Full and Life Members are invited to consider nominating themselves for election to the Board. Prospective candidates are encouraged to contact the Trust Officers for a preliminary discussion in advance of preparing their nomination.

Stop Exploiting Loyalty

We met up with members of Spirit of Shankly before the our League match in December to display the STOP EXPLOITING LOYALTY banner.  With 19 out of 20 top-flight clubs raising prices over the summer, and a widespread attack on concessions for supporters at both the younger and older end of the spectrum, there are so many issues that affect supporters of all clubs, and it’s vital that we work together to oppose them.

Meet the Spurs Journalists event – Save the Date

After the huge success of our event last year we are delighted to say that we will be hosting another Meet the Journalists event on the evening of Monday 24 February.  We have an elite line up of journalists and can’t wait to hear their insight and take on exactly what is happening at Spurs, what we can look forward to and what it is like covering the mighty Spurs.

This evening is a fundraiser for Prostate and Pancreatic Cancer charities and honours the memories of our two former, much loved Board members, Kevin Fitzgerald and Pete Haine, who did so much to raise awareness and funds for these vital charities.

THST Full members will be receiving emails shortly to get priority tickets for this event which is bound to be a sell out. So in the meantime make sure your membership is up to date – you can sign up here or upgrade your membership by logging in to your account.

An evening of insight and entertainment with Spurs journalists

Atmosphere at the Stadium

All Spurs fans want the Stadium to be a fortress where the opposition knows it’s playing against a strong team, backed by a wall of sound coming from the home support.  It’s been disappointing to see the frustrations felt by fan groups who work hard to support the matchday atmosphere, through singing sections (@ROTS1882), fan created songs (@SpursSongSheet) and flags and TIFOs (@THFCflags).  We lobby the Club through the Trust and the Fan Advisory Board to use their communication channels to promote the work of these groups and to call for volunteers to support them.  While we understand that THFC will want to ensure that visuals and other content meet their specifications, there is a massive amount of knowledge and skills that can be benefitted from by listening to and trusting the fans. Together we are stronger.

Broadcasters must re-think their approach to TV scheduling

 Away Fans in home areas

Our recent home matches against Manchester United and Liverpool saw possibly unprecedented levels of away fans in various home sections throughout the stadium.  This matters, and is unacceptable for many reasons:

  • an away fan in a home seat means a Spurs fan is missing out on a chance to see their team;
  • it negatively impacts on the atmosphere as obviously there are less people cheering on our team;
  • it is annoying and distracting seeing the people around you filming opposition attacks and in the worst cases, openly celebrating away goals;
  • it places the onus on home fans to report these to stewards, who do not appear to deal with the incidents consistently;
  • in several cases it results in conflict between supporters, and can be distressing for those involved as well as eg children sitting nearby;
  • it begs the question how so many away supporters got these tickets in the first place and why so many match day tickets end up on secondary ticket platforms.

We have been urging the Club for many years to find ways to beat the touts and ensure it is Spurs fans in Spurs seats.  We eagerly await the introduction of rolling QR codes which should at least partially address these issues, and are disappointed that this is not scheduled to be introduced until next season.  In the meantime, it’s hard to see how things are going to be different for our forthcoming semi-final against Liverpool.

We support fans with specific concerns and act as a conduit between them and the ticketing and stewarding teams at Spurs.

What can home fans do if there are away fans in their area?

  • if you feel comfortable to do so, report it to a steward and urge them to take action – if they do not, ask to speak to a senior steward;
  • if you do not feel comfortable doing this, use the texting service on 07537404821and give details of block, row and seat number (this is only monitored during matches);
  • contact the Club:
  • after the game email the Club and copy us giving as much information as possible, including block, row and seat number.

We have asked the Club to be more proactive in publicising the ways that away fans in home sections can be reported and to ensure that all stewards are briefed on the importance of this issue and of taking action when it is reported.  They need to be aware of the scale of the problem so please do report it.

We wrote to the Club:

‘It feels inevitable that the same thing is going to happen for the semi-final v Liverpool and it makes an already challenging experience, unbearable.  Can you give us any hope that things will improve and that it will be Spurs fans in Spurs seats, enabling us to build the cauldron of sound we need and for everyone in home sections to be able to get behind our team?’

European Away Matches

We have urged the Club ticketing team to open applications earlier for European away games so that fans know if they have been successful and can make travel arrangements earlier.  We are expecting a relatively straightforward experience for the match at Hoffenheim, but we need to know how many tickets will be available and how likely we are to get a ticket.  We’ve also been asked by members for advice on where to stay, and although we haven’t had the pre-match meeting with the Club, the likelihood is that many Spurs fans will stay in Heidelberg

Following the Rangers away tie, we received reports of a longer than expected holdback which had a knock on effect on the ability of fans to make the last trains on the Glasgow metro, meaning a long walk back to the city centre for some. We have reported these concerns both to the Club and the FSA/FSE. Fans travelling to European away games are reminded to complete the FSE post-match survey so that any issues can be raised with UEFA.

Pricing for Carabao Cup Semi Final

We were pleased that Spurs took on board most of our advice for ticket pricing for the Carabao Cup semi final and retained the same pricing strategy as for the quarter final v Manchester United,  We are disappointed that there are no concessions for young adults or seniors but welcome the pricing of £37 for adults and £10 for juniors.  These games mean so much to us all and we want them to remain affordable, so that we can all play our part in achieving victory for the team.

Latest FAB Minutes

The FAB met on Tuesday 10 December 2024. You can find minutes from the meeting here.

Discussion included the FAB calling for no increase in ticket pricing for next season, further discussions on concessions and general ticket management. There was also continued calls for a club museum and a statue for Bill Nicholson.
